question on qb changes
-
Saturday, September 06, 2008 5:14 PM
I am asking not to argue but to learn: why did we change quarterbacks at the times that we did? It made no sense to me but I am hopeful that others have more insight here than I do.

I have no ideal. It was odd to say the least. Threet should be the starer period. He was in a good groove and was moving the team.

Anyone arguing Threet as the certain starter better have one heck of an explanation, his accuracy was AWFUL today. We cannot afford to miss wide open guys. Both quarterbacks led nice drives, Sheridan (once again) looked much more crisp on the shorter throws, while Threet continued to overthrow WIDE OPEN receivers with tons of space. Listen, if Threet can start to actually connect on some of these deeper routes, I think he should start, but thus far he hasn't separated himself enough to be the de-facto starter. The nice thing is, it's not hard to see that if the execution comes around, this offense is capable of doing a thing or two.

Threet is the better qb. Like it or not. It is what it is.

I do agree with his accuracy being horrible, however it is possible that the changes got him out of the game rhythm. I realize he missed some receivers before he was pulled, but if he received all of the reps with the first team and got all of the game snaps, I think it would help him significantly.

mazebacker70 Threet is the better qb. Like it or not. It is what it is. Go ahead and tell me what the furthest pass down-field he completed today was. Doesn't matter how big his arm is if he can't get the ball somewhere where his receivers can catch it. Like I said, BOTH quarterbacks engineered very nice drives today, and I don't think either has done enough to lay claim to the starting position.

Given that, and you know I never disagree with you, in today's game, I cannot fathom why our coach changed qbs when he did - it was almost random - or at least it seemed to me - from Threet to Sheridan with a few minutes left in the first half? Then at the start of the second half it seemed very last second that it was Threet - then somewhere in the second half, I forget when, back to Sheridan but I couldn't see the reasoning at the time that it was happening - that's what I am asking, because there must be a reason, why we switched today when we did - a reason that I cannot see as for next Saturday who knows

I think he went into the game planning to get both snaps, and that's why you saw the changes, can't speak to what decided then when/where part of the decision.

I believe you have to put the only 2 starting Qbs on the field so they can try to work through the different situations and get use to them.Just think if one gets hurt you need to have another that can somewhat handle the pressure.

I was thinking with a few minutes left in the game Coach Rod was letting Sheridan redeem himself of last week. If sheridan was significantly different then Threet I could see using both, but now that Threet has a running game, perhaps we should give him most of the reps. He's got to complete the passes he missed today against ND next week if we are to win that game. I'd imagine their db's a slightly better than Miami's at least. Honestly, and I know he's new, but I haven't seen the 4 star aspect of him yet.

Threet was about 4/8 for 8 yards in the previous three drives, including a couple completions for negative yards. It's clear neither guy has convinced the coaching staff that he is the clear starter. I think Threet was on his way, but those were some horribly thrown balls that easily could have gone for 6 if they were on the money.

Threet's accuracy was anything but accurate today. While he ran the ball well, he missed many open receivers. I haven't watched the game but once yet, but I don't believe either qb completed a pass beyond five yards. Sheridan looked unimpressive, but he wasn't given an opportunity to throw the ball. I disagree that there was any offensive rhythym when Sheridan came in, but I can't begin to explain the reasoning for the change. In the end, I feel one quarterback played poorly and one wasn't given the opportunity to make any plays. Surely after today we can stop saying that is clearly Threet's job to lose.

For the past two games Sheridan has the higher qb rating, higher pass completions, and more yards passing. I believe he has more yards rushing as well so, surprisingly, Sheridan appears to be the more productive qb of the two.

After last weeks game I would say Threet all the way, but after today?? I see why RR is having a hard time.. One thing I noticed about Threet is he seems to make better play fakes hes not so quick about it like Sheridan. It seems like on passing plays they both need to just relax EDIT: Oh I dont know why he didnt wait to switch intill half .. I was think a trick play was going to happen lol

Maybe coach is just trying to see each QB in game situations so that he can settle on one to use in conference play. Let's be honest. This team was not going to compete for a national championship. Why not play for the Big 10 title? Best way to evaluate talent is in a game situation. Just a thought.

I think I speak for a lot of people in the belief that if Threet is able to harness some of the potential, he will definately be a better option. He does seem to have a greater grasp of the run game, but I would like to see Threet have the opportunity to throw something other than a screen and a go route.

Threet has potential to be a good QB but it looks to me like he needs to work on his footwork a lil' bit it looks like he still throwing high school balls and just lobbing the ball up.I'd like to see him step into his passes and put a little more heat into them. Sheridan is horrible IMO when he gets rushed he panic's and throws wild passes. He will cost us some games if he continues to throw wild balls when under pressure.
