RE: Commitment #13 - DeQuinta Jones - Thursday, July 24, 2008 3:03 PM
From Jim Stefani

What I really like about the Michigan verbals is the overall speed, quickness and athleticism of the kids, irrespective of their national “ranking”.  Take the most recent verbal, DeQuinta Jones, as a prime example.  He doesn’t have the national rep of some of the linemen Michigan has lost out on to Notre Dame in recent weeks (Zach Martin, Chris Watt, Alex Bullard), but at the end of the day he COULD be the best of the bunch.  He is the type of kid who would have probably received a late LSU offer or gone to a school like Auburn.  LSU and Auburn always seem to have these big and athletic defensive linemen who emerge out of recruiting oblivion to become eventual high NFL draft choices.  The fact of the matter is that a lot of these kids in the Deep South play for small town or rural programs and have not had the weight-training nor been hyped in the same manner as midwestern suburban Catholic school stars such as Watt and Martin or stars emerging from powerful prep school programs such as Bullock.  Jones is a prime example of a “high upside” prospect who has his best football ahead of him.

Reported 6'4 - 305 lbs - 4.8 - 40  at LSU camp
