Commitment #13 - DeQuinta Jones - Monday, July 21, 2008 5:56 PM
Just broke on Rivals. 3-star DE from Louisiana, teammate of Rueben Randle's. Had offers from Alabama, Cal, Ole Miss...rumors were the LSU camp felt he was underrated and was going to offer eventually.

If Saban, Tedford, and possibly Miles offered him, he must be decent. It's great to see a DE commit on the board.  Keep 'em coming.

Welcome to Michigan Dequinta!

Awesome news.  Very glad to get a defensive end, especially a kid from the south.  Great pick up for us and welcome to the Wolverines DeQuinta!  Go Blue!

Rivals used quotes straight from the kid's mouth. I'll believe that over some pettiness from a competing site bitter that they got scooped on the news.

So does this put us in better shape for Rueben Randle? I bet the SEC schools talk down about the Big Ten Conference, but Jones probably realizes we can play with the southern schools, and maybe that will open up Randles eyes too. If we put him across from McNeal we would be an amazing passing team. Only time will tell.

I'm not going to say that this really increases our chances or stealing Randle, because I don't think it does, I think he's an LSU lock - but having one of his teammates committed certainly can't hurt.

I'd love to steal Randle or Shaq. McNeal was in Shaq's ear ALL weekend, they became fast friends (over an arcade game of all things). I think if RR shows his wideouts aren't just going to be extra blockers, Michigan will be a serious player for Shaq.

Word is that DeQuita could possibly be getting a 4th * in the near future.   When the rankings came out he didn't really have any offers and Rivals didn't feel they could justify a kid with no offers getting 4*s.  Now that he has a high quality list of offers the next time the rankings come out he should be getting his 4th *.  Great get for RR outta Les' backyard!

I hope we got him, LSU fans like him a lot, just not sure if they have room for him.
I thought he was still at camp as LSU now. If true seems odd he would commit while being at camp at LSU. I know Hobson and him get along good, and thats what they are saying he did, called Coach Hobson and commited. He is a good kid with good grades, it would be a nice pick up.

I think we have a decent shot at Randle or Shaq.

It's GREAT....TO BE....A Michigan Wolverine....
The division between the Rich Rod supporters and the Rich Rod bashers/Carr supporters is amazing and has turned this place upside down.

Sure sounds good, especially coming from the deep south of all places and the competition there. All them down home country boys grown up on southern cooking and sunshine, that boosts em up half a star right there! It's nice to hear but I wil wait for more substancial word until I peg him as number 13...

What are you talking about?  The conversation went like this:
"I talked to Coach (Jay) Hopson and he asked me if I was ready to be a Wolverine and I said 'Yes sir,'" Jones told Rivals.com national analyst Barton Simmons Monday afternoon. "Coach Rodriguez was in his office and heard the celebration down the hall and came out to see what it was all about and found out I committed."

There was a huge arguement about this same thing last night over at Rivals.  WHAT MORE CONFIRMATION DO YOU NEED THAN THE WORDS OUT OF THE KIDS OWN MOUTH!?

If I was saying it, it would be a commitment.  but, I know people who would mean it literally ... Yes, I'm ready to commit, but that is different than, "I am committing."  I just know people who would do that.

It's just so out of the blue! I admit I'm not a top notch recruting dude, perhaps not even a notch, but has he even been to the University yet? It just seems kinda abrupt but hey, if that's the kind of recruiting force Coach Hopson is he needs to keep his bags packed!

Maybe this will shed some light.

Looking for someone to thank for Michigan's newest commitment – three-star defensive lineman DeQuinta Jones? Look no further than U-M linebackers coach Jay Hopson, Bastrop (La.) High School coach Brad Bradshaw said Tuesday …

"Jayhas been recruiting DeQuinta since he was a sophomore," Bradshaw said."He signed his older brother a few years ago and has an outstandingrelationship with the entire family. He's recruited a bunch of kidsfrom our school before, signed a few, and I told DeQuinta, 'If you wantto go way up there to Michigan you have my support because I trust JayHopson completely.'"

Jones, who also sported offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Oklahoma Stateand California, made his decision on Monday morning while watchingtelevision with Bradshaw.

"We had ESPN on and there was asegment from Ann Arbor about Michigan's national championship teams[Titletown], and I just saw this big smile on DeQuinta's face,"Bradshaw recalled. "He didn't even have to say anything because knowingthe kid I knew he had made his decision. I was calling Coach Hopsonabout something else so it worked out that we could get this done assoon as he was ready.

"I made DeQuinta call Coach Rodriguezbecause it's important you let the head coach know. He had a privateconversation but obviously he was pretty happy when he had let the[Michigan] coaches know he was a Wolverine."

Don't be surprised if he ends up at DT.  Some reports have him up around 300 lbs.

From Jim Stefani

What I really like about the Michigan verbals is the overall speed, quickness and athleticism of the kids, irrespective of their national “ranking”.  Take the most recent verbal, DeQuinta Jones, as a prime example.  He doesn’t have the national rep of some of the linemen Michigan has lost out on to Notre Dame in recent weeks (Zach Martin, Chris Watt, Alex Bullard), but at the end of the day he COULD be the best of the bunch.  He is the type of kid who would have probably received a late LSU offer or gone to a school like Auburn.  LSU and Auburn always seem to have these big and athletic defensive linemen who emerge out of recruiting oblivion to become eventual high NFL draft choices.  The fact of the matter is that a lot of these kids in the Deep South play for small town or rural programs and have not had the weight-training nor been hyped in the same manner as midwestern suburban Catholic school stars such as Watt and Martin or stars emerging from powerful prep school programs such as Bullock.  Jones is a prime example of a “high upside” prospect who has his best football ahead of him.

Reported 6'4 - 305 lbs - 4.8 - 40  at LSU camp
