2008 class rank: 10 Who said Rich Rodriguez was going to struggle recruiting top players to Ann Arbor? After seeing what he was able to do down the stretch - and then to start off this way - there should be no doubt that he's going to be a successful recruiter in the Big Ten. Michigan's class is only 12 deep at this point, but it has top-shelf recruits. Five-star defensive tackle William Campbell has been as impressive as anybody in the nation this offseason. The Wolverines have added play-making receivers for the future with Bryce McNeal and Dewayne Peace. Running back looks to be solid for the future, too, with Jeremy Gallon and Fitzgerald Toussaint on board.

And it can only get better from here!! If we land 5-star Darius Winston and Shaq Evans were talking like #1 or #2 class in the country!!!

They're both going to be very tough gets.

Evans is very skeptical about the spread offense...if Michigan can impress him both on his official visit here and to Notre Dame (he's visiting ND during the Michigan game), our chances will greatly increase.

And Winston...well, the track record of 5-star kids leaving the South speaks for itself.

RR is going to have to load up on the snake oil. These two would be amazing to land, but it's going to be a war, recruiting wise.

They're both going to be very tough gets.

 
I agree about Evans, I'm not so sure we land him but I really think we have a good shot at getting Winston judging by his comments last month. I think we were the sole reason he decommitted.

Rod's already lured quite a few from the South, we'll just have to wait and see I guess.

EFWolverine's response is a reasonable one - ie, not blinded by fandom.  Rodriguez has never gotten a 5-star player out of the sout and those players rarely leave.

Also, while the class will get better - we're going to add bodies, not subtract - the class ranking can (and likely will) get worse.  I really wish people would drop their illusions of bringing in a #1 or #2 ranked recruiting class in the country and just be very happy with what Rodriguez has accomplished in recruiting to date having not coached one snap at Michigan.  We're doing very well, but face it: our class is not and will not be Ohio State's or USC's this year.  Neither will 117 other schools.  We're still doing ok.

Considering the fact that Winston named Michigan his leader, I would say they can get him. I don't care if he's from the deep south, Michigan can recruit anywhere it wants to, especially after owning the SEC in bowl games. Kids know if they play for the Big Blue they are at the same level as the SEC.

Don't get me wrong, Michigan CAN get him, and I actually do believe they WILL. But he already has people in his ear saying Michigan isn't the right place for him, and Texas is still looming large overhead. They haven't offered yet, and he's planning on visiting there eventually. That's why I really hope UM can get Winston in for a visit, whether it's official or unofficial, before everything freezes over up here. It's going to be that much harder to land him if he's visiting Austin in 75-degree weather one week and then Ann Arbor with 35-degree weather the next.

No. not really.  FL players have been coming north for years.  South Florida isn't really the same.  Generally, in college football circles, as in many others (eg, politics), "the South" refers to the deep south but not Florida below, say, the Orlando area which begins to be, culturally, quite different from the rest of the state and the region.  Getting players from GA, SC, AL, MS, LA and AR to leave the south has been much more difficult, however.

But, that's not really the point.  These are the points: 1) Michigan is doing very well in recruiting.  2) Michigan likely won't end up with the #4 class in the country, nor will it's class likely be ranked ahead of OSU's or USC's.  3) Wishful thinking by fans rather than thoughtful and informed analysis is silly (I hope Michigan gets Shaq Evans, Jamal Berry, Darius Winston, and Sam Montgomery, too! But, I know nothing about Michigan's chances with any of them save what I read on free sites)  4) Yet, Michigan still will have a very highly ranked, and likely very good, recruiting class that should be viewed as all the better given Rodriguez's tenure of nill.

i think we'll defeinitely have a top 10 class with a good chance of a top 5 class. i think RR has got some kids that will improve rankings wise as the season progresses. i agree though, rankings dont mean anything. RR has shown he can beat top level teams with 2 star kids.

Last time I looked at a map Florida was in the south so I just assumed that Noel Devine counted. I didnt know about florida not being the south in recruiting terms.

Yes, we are ranked #4...right now...With the exception of a few (ieOSU) most of the other teams will be ADDING to their team AS WELL ASMICHIGAN!  Meaning, unless we go drastically lower in rankings ofrecruits, or the other teams get drastically BETTER recruits, we shouldall remain relatively the same as far as rankings go. 

But your right...either way, its about who you get to fit your system, not EVERY 5 star that is put on the board!
