As Rodriguez astutely pointed out in the deposition, why was West Virginia’s governor, Joe Manchin, sticking his nose into the football matters? Didn’t he have a state to run? That has long been a baffling part of the case, why the governor was so involved in the football team and this process with Rodriguez. It seems now that Manchin felt it was his place because Rodriguez was his friend -- for more than 20 years. In fact, Manchin helped get Rodriguez his walk-on spot as a player at West Virginia in the 1980s. In a contract dispute, this is what you call a red herring. Sure, it seems odd but has nothing to do with whether RRod's contract is enforceable.
