On Beaver at the elite 11 camp

Initially Beaver looked unsure of himself and a bit shy as the Elite 11 kicked off, but as he moved into the second day and stayed for the NFTC event, Beaver began to just play and not think. His arm became more live, and you could see his confidence rise. He is still a project in the passing game, but he is one heck of an athlete and a dual-threat guy who will only improve as a passer.

It didn't take a long time into his tenure for Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez to identify quarterback as a position of need on the recruiting trail; nor has it taken much time to do something about it. U-M got a commitment from Wichita Falls (Texas) Rider quarterback Shavodrick Beaver April 29, its second top 15 quarterback in a week and a pickup one opposing coach praised.

Beaver joins Kevin Newsome as a pass first but dual threat quarterback from the class of 2009, having thrown for 2,600 yards as a junior. Head coach Travis Pride of nemesis Wichita Falls Senior High said the numbers don't tell the entire story.

"He is a heck of an athlete," said Pride, 0-2 against Rider in his two years at the helm. "They are our No. 1 nemesis ... he'll beat you any way he wants to. He's mobile, he can throw, he has a strong arm and he's extremely athletic."

Pride then took his praise another step.

"I'm a little bit hesitant to say this, because some people take it out of context ... he's not [former Texas All-American] Vince Young, but he sure reminds you of him," he said. "He's built the same, he can run, he's tall and lanky. Vince's athleticism was certainly an attribute to him. He can run around, create time, and if he faces a pass rush throw later. He has a very strong arm, so he's a heck of a threat."

Rivals.com's Barry Every attended a recent Elite 11 combine in Texas where Beaver and several others got the opportunity to show off their arms. Though the camp wasn't set to Beaver's strengths, U-M's most recent commitment still caught his eye, Every said.

Though outshined by some of the pro style quarterbacks at the event - as many "dual threat" quarterbacks are, Every noted, especially by those who have camped before - Beaver was one of the two quarterbacks in attendance the analyst said he'd choose to build a program around.

"On film, I love the kid," said Every. "I think he is going to make stuff happen when plays break down, no question. The Elite 11 is not designed in any way for any quarterback considered an athlete or dual threat, and I'm not saying that to defend the kid. He still caught my eye, and I liked what I saw the few times they let him roll out and throw the ball.

"They were split into four groups, and they made them throw into a very stiff wind the entire time. Everyone struggled to throw ball on a regular basis, no matter how good the quarterbacks were. But Shavodrick is a physically gifted athlete, and we saw it in the agility drills. The only thing I question that he needs to work on - and it's going to come with physical development - is his arm strength. But he is definitely a throwing quarterback."

And a game-planning nightmare, said Pride. It's pick your poison when deciding the best way to attempt to slow him, especially with his ability to make something happen when the pocket collapses.

"That's the problem," said Pride. "They'll line up in the spread offense and you count on slowing down the passing game. He'll pick you apart anyway. Then if you try to slow down the run game, he'll find another way. If you go into pass mode, your defensive backs working their tails off to cover receivers, then you have a quarterback with 4.5 speed running around ... all of sudden you're back in run defense mode after he takes off.

"Even if you have a great secondary, you're left with defensive linemen chasing a much better athlete. In that offense they use him from sideline to sideline to sideline, and it's so tough to defend. When they called a pass, even when he didn't complete it - or even throw it - he'd get outside when we were all spread out, turn the corner and gain 30 yards."

Its almost indescribable how excited I am to watch the future of UM football.  These next few years are going to really be something!

Tight end is not all that important in RR's offense.

Recruiting TEs and WR should be easier now that we have two very good QBs in the class that will get them the ball.

Ok, Ive seen (hints)on both Rivals and Scout that Shavodrick Beaver and Bryce McNeal have been "working" on other recruits.  I don't have a paid access to get the details...so this is where you guys come in to play.  Can anyone fill me in with who they're working on?

In the weeks leading up to his Michigan commitment, four-star wide receiver Bryce McNeal had some encouragement from Wichita Falls (Texas) Rider quarterback Shavodrick Beaver, who had committed to the Wolverines the month prior. With summer looming, Beaver continues to do work on the recruiting trail for Michigan.

"I'm working on (Pahokee, Fla., four-star receiver) Nu'Keese Richardson," Beaver said. "I talked to him two days ago. I got some good feedback from him. He said Michigan was in his top (group) and he was going to try to make a decision on the 30th (of May)."

Beaver and McNeal continue to stay in close contact as well and the four-star quarterback could not be more excited about having a player of McNeal's caliber to throw the football to.

"I just feel he has the same opportunity that I have when we go to Michigan," Beaver said. "He's a primetime guy. I'll throw him the ball and he'll just do what he do. He can catch and he can play all over the field. I just felt he was one of the best receivers we had to have."

McNeal was the most recent of Michigan's eight total commitments thus far in the class of 2008 and Beaver is excited about the way the class is shaping up.
