The rumor mill is churning!!  Sounds like UM might not land only TF or SB...but BOTH!  How bout 3 top 10 QB's in one class!

Well if USC can land 10 high school All American RB's then why can't we land 3 top 10 QB's?

Sounds good to me...Got accepted into his face book, and a lot of people commenting about how well he could do at Michigan...not really many comments about other schools from other people though..

I'm as excited as the next guy to be getting a second top tier QB, but does it really make sense to sign three in the same recruiting class given our other needs?  Two is required and a third guy who we promise a chance but could also be a contributor as a CB/S or WR makes a ton of sense (Donovan Tate or, more likely, Stephen Gillmore), but three QBs when we need so many bodies on the OL, and DE and in the defensive backfield, not to mention how thin we are currently at RB / WR / slot, leads me to think that, ideally, that third slot should go elsewhere.

I absolutely agree.  Also, everyone needs to consider the possibility of a future transfer if we are to sign Forcier and Beaver too.

Obviously, if taking a third top tier QB didn't have any other implications, I would agree with this sentiment, but, given scholarship limits, that just isn't the case.  Now, if the staff is pretty confident that we're going to lose out on all / most of the players that could help us at OL, DB and DE - something I doubt the staff believes, especially at this stage of the recruiting cycle when some talent isn't even on the radar - then sure: a third top tier QB is fine.  I'm not woried about them competing with each other.

I touched on this in another thread, but I have no problem at all with bringing in 3 athletic quarterbacks in this class. The first argument is that in this system it is extremely important to have a more than capable backup that mirrors the starter in terms of style/ability.  Look at what happened to Oregon this year who had drop back passers behind Dixon on the depth chart.  My second argument is that whoever loses the battle for QB could easily be converted to fill another role on the team. 

I also don't know why everyone seems to think the team is thin or will be thinning out in the backfield or slot positions.  There are 3 capable running backs on the spring roster with 4 more coming in the fall.  A couple of them will end up in the slot receiver role.  Coach Rodriguez also brought in 2 guys specifically for the slot position. 

I agree that other needs and concerns shouldn't be neglected, but bringing in 3 athletic quarterbacks will not be detrimental in the least.

We have pretty serious needs at DB, OL and DE and it's obvious RR wants more WRs (both outside and slots) .  Two DEs should be a must, but I don't know if we'll get two good ones.  We need way more than two OLs given the quality we got last year, and DB is a priority area given how many question marks there are on the roster.

I'm not saying Newsome, Beaver and Forcier wouldn't all be nice to have, I'm just saying that, given limited resources (both scholarships to offer and focus of the coaching staff), OL, DE and DB should be higher priorities than a third QB.

Newsome enrolling early and counting against the 2008 scholarship limit would help matters, obviously.

I don't see the same need at DB.  We got a couple top guys coming in this fall, and we have two more top guys for the '09 class.  Plus, Warren is just a soph this fall.  Another top guy?  OK.

The way I see it, we need 4-5 DBs in this class ideally.  2-3 CBs and 2 Safties.

Increasingly, we're using 3 corners or 3 safeties in regular sets and, other than Warren and Cissoko, the cupboard is bare on the corner (we have no indication that Troy Woolfolk is any good and JT Floyd is probably a nickel guy rather than a true CB).  Assuming Woolfolk and James Rogers are more backups / special teams guys, we need two CBs at least.  Justin Turner is a good one, but 1 more is required and a third, if he's good, would be great.

At Safety, we have more bodies, but one (Michael Williams) is a small dude who probably fits better as nickel back (a la Brandon Harrison).  Charles Stewart may or may not back (if he doesn't start this year, we won't renew him for a 5th).  That leaves Steve Brown as the only upperclassmen at safety with Artis Chambers and Brandon Smith as underclassmen; Smith and Chambers look like good quality, but given that Isaiah Bell, one Safety committ, isn't a sure thing, we need a second

2 LBs, 2 DTs and 2-3 DEs; 2 OTs, 2-3 OGuards, 2 outside WR, 3-4 RBs / slot WRs (at least one pure RB and one pure slot WR).  We probably don't need a TE unless it is Dion Sims or somebody who could play DE.  As such, just 2 QBs seems right unless th third is brought in at CB/S/slot WR with a shot at playing QB.

While I don't understand why players would go to a school that is stacked at their position, it is very hard to argue with the success that USC has had with stacking all of the positions. Hey if we can get them all to want to come to Michigan, great! That will make it easier to recruit top talent at other positions as well. And then in 2010 we can afford to take only one qb or even none. Also, if Newsome counts against 08 schollies, and one or both of the other two were to redshirt we'd be just fine.
