I Paid 3.619/Gallon for Premium on Wednesday - Saturday, March 22, 2008 2:03 PM
I needed gas and forgot to stop in at Safeway on the way to work. If you have a Safeway Club card, you always get at least 3 cents/gallon off of the listed price of gas. Well...if I don't make it to Safeway in the morning, I can either hope to find an open pump after work (not likely), or I can just pull up and wait for a pump to open up. I hate waiting, so I figured I would get gas at lunch around work.

I had some other errands to run anyway, so I drove to a Circle K close to work. To digress, I used to live in Houston where you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a gas station, but they are fewer and farther between in Phoenix. Anyway, the Circle K had a posted price of 3.189 for regular which is about as good as the cheaper stations in my neighborhood. The problem with Circle K--of which I am now painfully aware--is that they only list the price of regular. I extrapolated that 3.189 for regular would mean 3.389 for premium. I pulled up to the pump and got out of the car to find that while regular was 3.189, mid-grade was 3.319 (13 cents more/gallon) and premium was 3.619 (or a whopping 43 cents more per gallon than regular). There is no rhyme or reason for premium to cost that much more, but it's obvious why they don't post the price, which is just Circle K just being fu*ksticks to lazy a$$es like me who figure "yeah, that price sucks, but I'm already here so I'm not driving to one or two other places to find the best price".

I'm doing fine; no one needs to hold a benefit for me. I paid the extra price, but I also resolved not to go back to Circle K. I told a few friends whose cars also run on premium about the lack of posted price and they won't be patronizing Circle K anytime soon either. It just doesn't make sense to me that if over 90% of a company's profit comes from repeat business, Circle K wouldn't be more concerned about the impact of messing with unlisted gas prices the way they do.

There's a lady who works in my office who used to be an exec with Circle K before she came to work for us. She wasn't in the office much this week, but I am going to ask her if this is a corporate "strategy" or if it's just something some franchisees do.

Just beware. If not all three gas prices are posted, that could be because the station charges a lot more for mid-grade and premium than past experience would have you assume.

I live in San Antonio, and the prices are neatly cheaper then up north in Michigan (I know you said this was AZ)  but for those who didnt read, I am not sure which Senator it is in Michigan, but they are proposing a 50 cent tax on gas to DETER drivers from using gasoline and to help pull them off the need for foreign oil.  Though I like the idea of somehow pulling away from foreign oil, this way of doing it to me is just crazy. Soon enough employers will have "I dont have enough money for gas" as their number one excuse why people call in, except this time it wont be an excuse!

After 52 years in Congress, I'd say it's more a case of he doesn't care if he get's re-elected or commits political suicide

I got $120 worth of gas for $.03 yesterday morning.  My mom had her Giant Eagle card up to $4.49 off per gallon.  I got the 30 gallon max @ $3.99 for 3 cents.
See you in another life, brother.

my jeep is parked

I have both bikes in use

any car errands will be done once a week in one trip

have to change the way we do things

save money on other things too - if all the groceries I can buy are what fits in my backpack for the bike ride home, I'll buy less junk

and my bike helmet is of course Winged Victory...

westchamp, i am with you on this one. last summer i found a yamaha razz in my grandpa's barn after he passed away. it did not run, i replaced the fuel petcock, clean the carb up, and put a new battery in it and it runs great. this is what i run around on when weather permitting. it gets 60mpg but only does 30mph. i plan on to open it up some with a big bore kit and regear it i am hoping to get it up to 40mph. Next summer repaint it blue with a winged hemlet all around the panels under the seat

Went to the Sandusky area yesterday and t was $4.19/gal for regular. Today in Columbus, I saw it from $3.87 - $3.99/gallon.

I remember a time long, long ago when I lived in Michigan I refused to pay for gas when it was over $1/gallon! UGH!!!! Those were the days!

all, watch the video on http://www.pickensplan.com/ and post your thoughts.

I like his folksy delivery and what he says certainly makes sense.  We should definitely be ramping up the pursuit of alternative fuels but if we continue to let the speculators artificially drive up costs of oil, how long before they're allowed to do the same with natural gas or even wind?  He also uses oil usage/dependency figures that compare 1970 to 2008, showing a big increase in usage over those years.  Of course, the US population in 1970 was 200+M and in 2008 it's 300+M, a direct corrolation to the oil usage increases he shows on his charts but doesn't mention.  More people, more businesses, more freeways, more cars, more gas.

The problem is this is big business, maybe the biggest.  If you want answers to why we aren't doing these things just follow the cash.  And this is not just an issue with the Middle East.  According to the Dept. of Energy, here are (in order) our biggest suppliers of oil:

1. Canada
2. Mexico
3. Saudi Arabia
4. Venezuela
5. Nigeria
6. Angola
7. Iraq
8. Algeria
9. United Kingdom
10. Brazil

Hmm.  Only 2 are Middle Eastern countries (3 if you consider Algeria).  Technically, we should be bombing Canada and Mexico.  Actually, we can take on Mexico with slingshots.

Your list appears to be off of 2007 totals.  Here's the 2008 totals through May:

Crude Oil Imports (Top 15 Countries)
(Thousand Barrels per Day)

CANADA
SAUDI ARABIA
MEXICO
VENEZUELA
NIGERIA
IRAQ
ANGOLA
ALGERIA
BRAZIL
KUWAIT
COLOMBIA
ECUADOR
RUSSIA
LIBYA
EQUATORIAL GUINEA

Kuwait moves into the Top 10 and the UK falls out of the Top 15.
