QB Kevin Newsome - Friday, March 21, 2008 4:44 PM
TheWolverine.com

The three-month long saga that was Michigan's recruitment of Terrelle Pryor ended on Wednesday with the nation's top prospect in the 2008 class signing with Ohio State. That now officially gives the Wolverines the opportunity to move forward at the quarterback position in the class of 2009 and one of their top targets is Chesapeake (Va.) Western Branch's Kevin Newsome.

When we had spoken to the 6-3, 215-pound Newsome earlier this month the four-star prospect mentioned he would be keeping an eye on Pryor and the decision he made because it involved a couple schools Newsome himself was considering, including Michigan. With Pryor signing with the Buckeyes, Newsome said that will help Michigan's chances at securing his services.
"Of course it is going to change it because of Pryor," said Newsome. "With him not being there it really puts Michigan up there on my list."

Michigan's chances with Newsome took another step forward last week Saturday when an official offer letter from the Wolverines arrived in the mail.

"Right now I have the piece of paper in my hands," said Newsome. "I'm greatly honored to have been offered by Michigan. I was just smiling and it was a great honor. I think it is a great program and a great school. It's Michigan, the Big Ten and a very legendary school."

Before receiving the official offer, Newsome had received regular correspondence from the Wolverines, especially from assistant coach Fred Jackson who is his primary recruiter. Earlier this week, though, Newsome was able to speak on the phone with Jackson and Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez.

"I've talked to Coach Jackson and Coach Rodriguez and they are very intelligent men. They obviously know what they are doing there. I like them a lot," said Newsome. "I talked to them probably Monday or Tuesday and we were talking about the different offensive schemes and just Michigan itself. He asked me about hurdles and they both congratulated me on my achievements in track."

Newsome's total offer count is nearing 20 with the most recent coming from Kansas State. At this stage of the process he is still just seeing who comes through, but he expects the time to start making decisions about the future of his recruitment to come soon.

"Right now I am still a little laid back and waiting for whomever wants me, but it's almost evaluation time," Newsome said. "I am looking at the colleges one-by-one and looking them up on the Internet."

Part of Newsome's evaluation with involved visiting the campus on his own, something he expects to do later this spring.

"We should be up there pretty soon," he said. "I'm not sure when, but we are going to especially visit Michigan. It will probably be this spring."

Besides picking up the mail everyday, Newsome is also heavily involved in track where he is one of the top hurdlers in the country. He recently finished his indoor track season and is getting ready to move into outdoor track.

"I won state in the high hurdles and I placed fourth at nationals," Newsome added. "At the state meet it was the 55 [meters] and at nationals it was the 60."

I saw some video of him on rivals and although his throwing mechanics look funky, to say the least, this is a really impressive kid.  Another plus is that his high school wears the same helmets as UM!

Sound like the type of kid that could commit at summer camp, seems like he likes Michigan a lot. Question is do we like Tate Forcier better?

Question: If a player gives us a verbal, can we still withdraw the offer ... like if a better prospect accepts later?  I know that would not be a good idea PR-wise, just wondering.  Does it ever happen?

Yes we can pull an offer, but highly doubt it would happen. Most of the time offers get pulled if a commit visits another school after commiting(and both sides have agreed no more visits), or they have off the field trouble. My guess is if someone like Newsome commited, Forcier's interest level would drop. Whats likely to happen if Michigan wants Forcier more than Newsome, but Newsome wants Michigan is that we'll string Newsome along while putting the full press on Forcier. Set a goal date, if Forcier hasn`t commited by then go full out after Newsome. Or we could go after both, and bring Newsome in as an athlete. Its risky and teams that do that often get burned, but recruiting isn`t always a pretty business. My guess though is that RR would take the first player that wanted to commit between Forcier and Newsome(bird in the hand type of thing).

Personally its hard for me to choose between Newsome and Forcier, both are good players but with different skill sets. I like Forcier a little better than Newsome because of his passing ability and he`d  be more ready from day one to play IMO because of how well he's been coached.

He has said he want to enroll early, so if he visits this spring and wants to verbal, we of course take it, If he comes in early and can do winter workouts and spring training, it's a big plus. RR will still take another QB in this class anyway.

He sounds like a commitment in the making to me. On tape it looks like he is a pass first and run later type of QB. He has sort of a long release, but he can definitely bomb it. I was hoping we would be looking at passing QBs who can run, not running QBs who can sort of throw. With Newsome and Tate in the mix, we are getting just that.

Forcier is a passing QB that can run IMO, to me he's much better passing than he is running.

Yea, that's what I meant about Newsome and Tate.

Wow, I need to work on being a little more specific...

I know I've read that RR wants to sign 2 qbs, but I can't recall a time where two 4 star qbs signed in the same class. It would be great though. Have either Tate or Newsome commented on being one of 2 qb's in the class?

Newsome or Tate along with a less recruited player, or an "athlete" like McGee sounds more likely.

From Scout...

Newsome says that he and his family will be at Michigan for their Spring Game. Academics, style of play, and depth chart will all be important factors.

Looks like we can offer him everything he is looking for I hope he feels the same way..

That's the same thought that I had.  On most of the plays he only had a few seconds before there was a DL in his face.  It seems that he is pretty good at backfield evasion as a result

eck he floated quite a few passes. I'm a little worried about his arm strength. Most of those passes would have been picked in college. Oh well I'm sure we could coach him up.

Yeah he didn`t show the best arm in that clip, I`m hopeful that those passes were a result of knowing his WR couldn`t catch bullets. Might be a pipe dream on my part though. Personally I`ll still take Tate Focier over Newsome at this point, seems RR doesn`t agree though so I`ll defer to him.

Why would he be so interested in a Pro-style offense?  That part doesn't seem to line up for me.  He appears to be a gifted runner as well as passer, so why limit himself to the traditional drop-back signal calling?  Also, how many schools is he interested in?  20?

All of these young dual-threat QB's who have high potential think that they have to play in a pro-style offense because it looks beter for the NFL. This may be true in some cases, but does anyone remember that guy named Vince Young? Yea, he went #3 overall, I would say thats pretty good. If you play in a spread offense you can run the ball and showcase every skill you have, so I don't really get the pro-stlye argument.

Not really much on his visit from Kevin, as his Mom said when he got back he had to catch up on homework, this is a good family and academics are important.

Here is a little his Mom said.

"Michigan is a very nice place. We really enjoyed ourselves," Newsome's mother commented. "We saw the Business School, met academic advisor Shari Acho and the strength coach, Mike Barwis. That guy is unbelievable. He's a pretty cool guy. We met Coach Rich Rodriguez and all the coaches and they were all very nice."

For those of you who do not know who Shari Acho is, she is the Associate Athletic Director, Academic Success Program, and a parents dream, as she goes over the recruits academic side, a lot of recruits have said, they don't get this on other school visits. She is a great recruiting weapon, very tough, but also always looking after the players academic side while they are at Michigan. and players who have graduated in the past, always have great things to say about her. One time she bumped into a players car in the parking lot, and left a note on the windshield telling the player, "if you thought that was a big hit, just see how hard i hit if you slip on your grades" signed Shari Acho

Kevin hung out with Teric Jones, Michigan RB commit from Cass Tech while at the game, and was all smiles. This is a real good kid, with great work habits, on and off the field.

Some good info....

Chesapeake, Virginia quarterback Kevin Newsome had his first look at the University of Michigan Saturday, and despite undesirable weather conditions
the youngster and his family couldn’t have been more impressed. The Maize & Blue made a strong case for itself as Newsome’s optimal collegiate
option, but he still has one major question about how he might fit into Rich Rodriguez’s program.

The play of Michigan’s trio of quarterbacks during Saturday’s spring game may have given Rich Rodriguez headaches at times, but his pain likely
subsided when took time to imagine the possibility of Chesapeake, Virginia standout Kevin Newsome taking the helm of his offense in a few years. The
Western Branch High star made his way to Ann Arbor with his family over the weekend, and they were blown away by the experience.

"Even with the weather as bad as it was, it was a great visit," Newsome’s father told GoBlueWolverine. "We were really impressed with everything.
They had us on a schedule where we got a chance to see a lot of different things. They gave us a full tour of the business school. (Ross School
Director of BBA Student Affairs) Rob Koonce took us all through there. He was great. At the same time (as the tour) they were having a MBA
recruitment session going on, so that was really good. There were already a lot of people there. There were a couple of instructional situations
going on too, and we got to peek in. For it to be Saturday (the business school visit) was exceptional."

The tour exposed a few of the department’s best attributes and made it easier for Newsome to envision success in the program should he opt to become
of Wolverine.

"We noticed some of the diversity of the people moving around in the business department," Mr. Newsome said. "We really liked that. We also
witnessed first hand how all of the money that was donated is really going to make the business department a lot larger. This new wing is really
going to help the kids in the program. We’re a family that’s academics first, so we were happy to see how pleased we were with the business
department."

Based on how impressive the academic presentation was, it seemed that the football side would have a tough time matching up. However, when the focus
shifted finally did shift to the gridiron side of things, the Newsome’s were equally blown away.

"We spent almost two hours talking to Coach Rodriguez," Mr. Newsome recalled. "He seemed like a hands on coach that’s really going to get down to
business. That’s the best way I can put it. From our initial meeting with him he seemed to be a very hands on guy. He seemed to be really excited
about being at the level of football that Michigan is known to be at. He is just ready to get to work."

"We liked Coach Jackson too," Mrs. Newsome added. "He wouldn’t be Kevin’s position coach, but we know that he would make sure our son is taking care
of. We really liked the whole coaching staff. We couldn’t believe how nice every one was."

Once again receiving special mention was the new head of Michigan’s strength & conditioning program.

"We really liked that super duper strength coach, Mike (Barwis)," said Mr. Newsome. "I’m sure there are some excellent trainers throughout the
college level, but with this guy I’m sure that if Kevin goes there, I’m sure he is probably going to get some of the best training in the country."

The experience really strengthened Michigan’s standing in Newsome’s recruitment, but the youngster and his family still have one significant
question about the Maize & Blue.

"We really had an excellent visit," Mr. Newsome reiterated. "We’re going to put that right up there with other places that we’ve gone. We’ve only
gone a couple of other places that really stood out, and (Michigan) is definitely one of them. We’re going to continue to take visits throughout the spring and the beginning the summer. But, again, Michigan is definitely right up there. The only question as far as Michigan (is concerned) would be
about Kevin going into that offensive system. We’re staying open about which type of system Kevin is going go into… whether it is more of a pro
style or more of a zone-read type of situation. But in either case, we feel like if we decided to come there, we’d be comfortable."

"Everything was great," he continued. "It really was a great visit and we were really surprised by just how much we liked it."
"good things may come to those who wait...but only what's left by those who hustle"

That's a very impressive article. Thanks. I've been most impressed with Newsome's and Russel Sheppard's comments. As I've said before, a qb's head is just as important as his arm strength and feet, if not more important.

Such a nice breath of fresh air compared to the new qb recruit that tUoOS landed.

Yea, that didn't turn out as we would have liked it to. I think he knows the potential that this offense has with the future recruits, and he loved the University. His parents seem to be a huge factor and they liked the visit a lot. I'll predict a commitment at the Army All-American game to the University of Michigan, but that's just me.

One thing I don't understand is why these duel-threat QB's seem to all be saying that they want to play in a pro-style system now. Where were they when we ran a pro-style offense that was a pipe line to the NFL?
Though I think once RR can prove to the media that the spread can be just as effective at passing as it as at running, I think this whole pro-style vs spread thing will start to die down.

If you watch any of the video on Kevin, he isn't as run oriented as other QB's. that's not to say that he can't run, but he definitely focuses on the pass. I can understand his hesitation where there would be a heavy emphasis on his legs.

he definitely is pass first, but watch the second play in this video, he is a great runner too, very good quickness.

thats the beauty of this offense, he doesnt have to run a bunch, he only has to be a viable threat to keep the defense on their heels.

He more then likely will be an early enroll, so i think he will commit this summer, for whatever reaons the Va Tech fans think he has lost interest in them, and from looking at the other teams on his list, I think we are the leader. All RR has to do is assure him he won't be a run only QB, none of these good young QB's want to run run the football, they want to pass it, and run if they have to,  like someone else said, just the threat that he can run, will keep the defense on it's toes. His family loved the school, and they have said the only concern is how he is used. As fast and atheletic as he is, he is still listed as a pro style QB, we have the RB's and the WR's, so let him be a pass first QB, or hand off the ball, and scramble when needed, and i think we land him.

**saw this pic, we have an all reciever set in this pic, including a slot and TE, this should let QB's know we will pass the ball.
