RE: Who's No. 1 at Michigan? Not Braylon's choice - Tuesday, May 13, 2008 12:30 PM
Here's a a clip from an article in the Times West Virginian.  Note the reference to Chris Carter instead of Anthony.  Wrong player, misspelled name, quality reporting.

"The No. 1 uniform meant a lot to Edwards. It has belonged exclusively to a wide receiver since 1979, dating back to Chris Carter. It wasn’t something that was given out arbitrarily, as Edwards learned. He had to work for it, his first two years not being allowed to wear No. 1 by coach Lloyd Carr."

Here's the full article.

My only take on this, until we get word from RR on what's going on exactly in August, is that LC made this a big deal by NOT letting Braylon switch #s until he had "earned the right" to wear the same # as AC.  Braylon earned that right, and THAT is the tradition I think he wants to continue.  Someone needs to earn the right to wear that number, and he needs to understand the responsibility that comes with it: Leadership and Dedication on AND off the field.

WVU should really get over it.  This article sounds like something a little kid would write.

Hey, guys, relax.  I'm sure RichRod will correct the snafu.  I'm sure he and his staff have had a lot more important things to do other than who gets what number.

Since it's stipulated in BE's and AC's endowments, I'm sure the number will be changed.

Exactly.  I'm sure Braylon was quite surprised and that can explain his demeanor, but uh... I think it'll all work out ok, someone will make Rodriguez aware of the scholarship fund and it's intracacies and I think everything will be hunky dory in the near future.

The whole #1 thing is a cool concept, but uh... it is just number (ducks hurtling objects).  It's very cool that we're trying to turn it into a special tradition and it does have some weight behind it thanks to AC, Edwards, and Terrell... and a little bit thanks to Alexander, but there are much bigger things here to be concerned about.  Case in point, the following players have donned the #1:

'94-'96 Tyrone Butterfield
'86-'89 Greg McMurtry
'73-'75 Dave Whiteford (DB/S!)
'76-'78 Dave Willner (KICKER!!)

If you were to ask me my favorite jersey numbers in Maize and Blue list would go something like this:
21, 2, 20...

Anyways, like was mentioned, someone will inform everyone of the scholarship program, etc, and this will work out just fine.

totally agree, here's a list of all who have wore the #1

#1 was not even a big deal when AC got it but ut turned out cool that he had it

there was no tradition about it until Braylon showed up

Braylon has had some nice games for us to say the least but Braylon likes to pump up Braylon' rep[

#1 is not a Michigan tradition

I also like to read what SCM,TK and TomWearsMazie have to say on other posts, those guys know their Michigan football!

Maybe its a age thing with the #1?
Younger fans see it as a tradition cause they remember just Braylon and Terrell wearing it not anyone esle... Like to me #23 will always be Jaime Morris..

Whoa! Easy Braylon...that's fine if we're going to start/keep the #1 as a tradition, but change the uniforms just as long as you keep the 30 year old, at best, #1 thing going? That's kind of out there.

7 guys (one a kicker and one who never saw the field) wearing the #1 in 28 years= "The No. 1 is one of our oldest, most storied traditions here -- don't change it." Huh????  Sorry Braylon-if you want to be the voice of Michigan Football Tradition you might want to start by actually picking..umm.. a real tradition.  Why do things always become more about Edwards than anything else?  This guy was half-baked while at Michigan and it's apparent nothing has changed.  Change the uniforms but don't change tradition?  This guy is nuts.  Please Braylon, we love ya' but go away.

No player other than a WR has worn the #1 since 79, thats a pretty long tradition. Not one of our oldest, but still has some history. What I don`t get is why so many Michigan fans are so offended by this becoming a tradition.

Geez, can't there be any new tradition. According to Braylon everything has been taken care of and RR is fine with it, why not let it go and embrace something new?

i dont think anyone is offended by it becoming a tradition. i do think he was way off base comparing this incident to changing our uniforms though.

This is what I don't get.  What is one of the first images that comes to mind when one says Michigan Football.  It's the uniforms!  But according to Braylon, the No.1 is bigger than Michigan's uniforms?  Dude needs to check his priorities?!

I don't think anyone is against embracing a new tradition.  Emphasis on the word NEW.  But, according to Braylon, the No. 1 is a more hallowed and storied tradition than the Michigan uniform?!  I don't know about everyone else, but I just feel like this is a tradition that is being forced upon us by Braylon.  I don't have a problem with it as long as it doesn't take away from another Michigan tradition and that is, "The Team, The Team, The Team!"

Yeah, I have no beef with the #1 thing, but it's far from UM's most sacred, long standing traditions. I'm just annoyed by what a big deal it's getting made out to be. If RR were going to kill any "tradition" I'd offer that one up for sacrafice in a second (not that I'm advocating it).

I would say there seem to be more offended that the so-called #1 jersey tradition was dishonored than anyone being offended about this becoming a tradition.

Actually, those of us that aren't too concerned about defending this so-called #1 tradition tend not to be offended, we're just not seeing the point of it when...

a) #1 WR tie has only been around since 1979, less than 30 years, and
b) There are only two WR's that really went on to be much of anything in the NFL and
c) a couple of those #1 wearers since 1979 are kind of like "wtf"

If the point you make is why aren't people for new tradition then I guess my question is what's wrong with RR making a new tradition for the #1 jersey? ;)

And, in fairness, I do see both sides. Personally, I would of liked it to become a tradition, but on the converse side if it doesn't pan out...I am not crying over spilt milk on this one. Remove the helmet decals and I'll be in his office with raised fists though.
