What is with all these 3 star commits? Come on Rod, this isn't WV you can get better talent than a boat load of 3 stars. I know there have been 3 stars who have turned out to be the best Wolverines ie Hart and Edwards, but those are the exceptions not the rule.

Yeah, this kid does look good though. I bet he is capable of a 4 star rating. Those stars can be biased to a small school like he attends. I still think it's a good get. Welcome Brandon!!

Also, why is this a thread? Hawthorne and his teammate Vincent Smith have been committed for two weeks now. Why this topic all of a sudden?

I really wish Lloyd would have put a ban on 3 star recruits. Life with Mike Hart sucked.

Oh I didn't mean to say I have a problem with this kid, I've never heard of him before, But more so about the sear number of 3 stars we have on the list. 3 Stars were the exception on the Michigan commit list, looking at it now they are the norm, with only a few 4 star guys.

Now in general, i have no problem with 3-stars or any other stars for that reason, but for the sake of discussion, ill take a team of 4-stars against a team of 3-stars anyday. Sure the 3-star team probably has some very solid players, some that may even go pro some day, but there is also a very good chance the team as a whole would get shalacked

Not that recruiting "experts" are flawless, but a player earns star rankings for a reason. I completely agree that seeing all these three stars is troubling. Look at the recruiting classes LSU, Florida, Texas, USC, and other recent NC have brought in. They are loaded with five and four stars, and have hardly any three stars. These schools have been where we are trying to get, but we need to bring in top caliber players to get there. I'm hopeful that a few national spotlight victories this year will change things.

I'm sorry but people have a serious overinflated view of Michigan's past recruiting. Per Rivals, this is the breakdown of three star or less recruits since 2005: 2005: 12 out of 23 2006: 8 out of 19 2007: 13 out of 20 2008: 7 out of 25 This year's class? 2009: 8 out of 16 (the other 8 being four stars) Seems like we are right where we've been for the last four years. So I don't think the recruiting is out of the norm at all. And as it pertains to Hawthorne, the guy had offers from Tennessee and West Virginia, so somebody else must think he's pretty decent. BigHouseFootball Oh I didn't mean to say I have a problem with this kid, I've never heard of him before, But more so about the sear number of 3 stars we have on the list. 3 Stars were the exception on the Michigan commit list, looking at it now they are the norm, with only a few 4 star guys.

Kids get stars based on who they have offers from. Rivals, Scout, ESPN etc. don't necessarily watch tape of all of these kids and evaluate them. So when a USC, LSU, Fla offer a kid, the kid's stars increase. It doesn't mean that the kid's suddenly playing any better. Seeing what RichRod did at WV with the talent he pulled, I'm going to assume he knows the type of player he needs to win, and he may or may not care how many stars a kid has attached to his name.

I'm sure if his family had money, he would be a 4 star already. Thats how that crap works, unless you are just an absolute beast. Like Will Campbell, dam Will makes my head hurt.

Fair enough, but that's not my point. I am more disagreeing with the general sentiment that Rod is somehow recruiting more three stars than UM has ever before. That's just simply not true. Now if your point is that UM has fallen behind USC and USC then that's a different question and I would agree with you. But that's not on Rod....yet.
