Shaw? - Friday, May 16, 2008 8:59 AM
Since he's signed a letter of intent, I figure I'll post this here as well.

Does anyone have any idea what this centers on?  The story is pretty vague:

Sounds like an institutional mess at Trotwood.

Shaw could get in trouble (not sure what he did wrong yet) and OJ Mayo gets off scott free in Ohio....yeah, seems fair to me....

This doesn't look at all like the OJ Mayo situation to me, Mayo supposedly accepted $30K while in HS.  The Shaw situation looks to me to be more about whether or not he was eligible to play in that school district.

From what I've read it shouldn't impact his eligibility at UM.

I'm involved with HS football in Michigan and residency problems are a constant headache.

The intent of the rules is to keep students from "school shopping" but the application of the rules can be problematic.

A few years ago we had a kid transfer in.  He sat out the first 3 games until his residency could be documented.  A full season later the kid transferred again to another school (during this time his parents separated, reconciled, and finally divorced.)  When the next school went to document his residency they discovered that his parents had lied in documenting his residency when he played for us.  The result?  Despite the fact that we had all the needed documentation we had to forfeit games when the next school discovered his parents had lied.

You also have situations where kids are living with relatives due to family situations who can't play sports because the documentation red tape takes too long to clear.

I don't know what happened in this case, BUT, I really have to wonder if this is more about 3 players from Ohio who went to Michigan. Would anyone even look into this if all three went to tUOS.  Maybe they need to relax these kind of rules as it goes on everywhere. I can think of many schools who are known to do this, and you never hear a word.
I could use some other Ohio examples but i won't.
Tate Forcier as an example is hated by his X highschool team (and fans) when he left to go to another school that would be better for his future.
It's a new era in high school football as it's getting big time, and like it or not, all these kids dream of the NFL, and start preparing at a much younger age. The good side of this is the freshmen are now more prepared to play at big schools, the biggest problem they have is just getting used and familar with college life. Kids are just growing up faster these days, and the better the high school program, the faster they adapt to college. The downside of course is a so so high school team loses a great player. So the real question is, should the high school team come first or the kids long term future. You could argue both sides.
