Obsessed Ohio St thinks they're in as good or better shape than UM!! - Monday, August 04, 2008 10:44 PM
http://blog.cleveland.com/sports/2008/08/osu_michigan_workouts_brutal.html

It's almost amusing that no matter what Michigan does, OSU thinks they can do it better!

  From the article:

"I don't know if you could have had a tougher summer than us andbeen able to walk," senior linebacker Marcus Freeman said. "Guys wereyakking, quitting, hurting, falling out -- it was pretty bad out therethis summer.
"Coach Lichter really pushed us to the point that you felt likeevery day you were tired and you couldn't go anymore. Most of the timeyou feel like, 'I'm getting in better shape,' but he did so much youfelt like, 'Hey, I just can't do anymore. Does this ever get easier?'But that's what makes us better."
That process was bumpy, and included, according to the players, itsfair share of fights and arguments, between players and between theplayers and Lichter.
"When you're exhausted, you get mad and you want to yell atsomebody," Freeman said. "We have the utmost respect for him, but thereare points where you say things to him."
"People were getting mad, and he tested everyone's will," juniorsafety Kurt Coleman said. "We had a meeting right before we got intoworkouts, and he told us it was about pushing ourselves to the limits."

Wonder what happened to Boren?  Is he still there? or transferring to Cincinati?  As Nelson in The Simpsons always says, ha ha

hahaha
My thoughts exactly.

I've got a feeling that OSU is trying to play MAJOR catchup in the conditioning dept.  But without the team buying into the program (Like it appears everyone here at Michigan has).

Didnt it sound like all their comments were complaints and not positive about what they did?

"People keeling over, and just vomiting everywhere. It was sick. "
"Guys were yakking, quitting, hurting, falling out -- it was pretty bad out there this summer. "
That process was bumpy, and included, according to the players, its fair share of fights and arguments, between players and between the players and Lichter.
"When you're exhausted, you get mad and you want to yell at somebody," Freeman said. "We have the utmost respect for him, but there are points where you say things to him."

This doesnt sound like anything I have heard come out of Michigans camp about Barwis. Yes they all agreed it was hard and demanding but never said anything like quitting and yelling at Barwis.

I saw on another board someone posted a few quotes from the bucks players, it's out of context but still funny.. I think these came from o-zone

"Guys were yacking, quitting, hurting, falling out. It was pretty bad out there this summer."
"People were puking, people were getting exhausted just from running and stuff.
"Guys were keeling over, passing out, in the four years I've been here it's the worst I've ever seen it,"

Anyone can make someone go out and puke, yack, passout, etc.  But if you're just running someone into the ground because you can then it isn't accomplishing anything.

Forgive me for stating the obvious, but do you really believe the team that has won 6 of the last 7 games in this series, including the last 4 in a row is really concerned about "catching up" to the team that has won 1 out of the last 7?

The Barwis program certainly is playing to rave reviews and I'm certain UM will field a more conditioned team this year (maybe the best conditioned ever). But that conditioning program has thus far won you exactly -0- games.

And 0 games won is where everyone stands.

But how many teams score in the last half of the second quarter, and how many games are Decided in the 4th?  More than anything (IMHO), being the strongest, quickest, smartest player on the field, ON EVERY PLAY,  determines the outcome.  And this Michigan team has been getting rave reviews in the first two departments.  We'll see how bright we are when we try to learn this new offensive scheme.

As for OSU, judging by this recent article, they're sweating bullets when they think of a Faster, Stronger, Younger and I have to say, HUNGRIER team coming to take away their last claim to fame.

it's funny how TuOS fans always say "6 out of the last 7"...  Were they ones that were hanging their heads for their first 13 losses to us?  How about the cooper years?  We would have to lose the next 17 games in a row for us to be "owned" by TuOS.  Yeah, so we lost the last 6 out of 7...  We still won the 100th game and the other milestones... sniff sniff.  I smell fear from camp TuOS and they are trying to catch up.  I just hope no one gets hurt because the egos got in the way.

Eric Lichter is a world class trainer.  He's trained professional and olympic athletes long before coming to OSU.  To think OSU is playing catchup in anything that UM is dong right now as it pertains to football is just not realistic.

Dont make me quote the boren picture again. Take a look at your linemen, then look at ours when the season comes and we'll see how good he really is. Sure you can get the position players into shape because they generally lift and run on their own, but it takes a full commitment from the entire program to have the entire team get into shape

No one has been in better shape than OSU in the Big Ten over the last 5 years.  That isn't going to change anytime in the near future.

whatever...what's your excuse the last 2 NC games?  Florida & LSU blew you guys out of your socks in the conditioning dept.  And we took care of Florida

UM did a great job turning around the program with RR & Barwis. Both have given a great shot in the arm and revitalized the program. Where it goes from there (comes down from a "high" or building the foundation for reaching the top) remains to be seen.

UM's conditioning, more specifically it's accountability and effort on an individual basis, was greatly lacking. Barwis is on the other extreme. The transformations of many players have been very noticeable and impressive.

The fact remains that UM has now caught up to the times. It makes for fun message board banter to describe who is the "MOST AWESOMEST!!!1!1!" in S&C, but both Lichter and Barwis are highly regarded in their fields. Lichter was a highly successful personal trainer (NFL Combines, etc) and has already developed a number of workout superstars. There will be more taken next fall.

Not every system requires ultra-trim linemen, which are not the form of highly conditioned athletes. Knowing more than your own surroundings and customs (in this case systems) is imperative for quality discussion and commentary.

As for the rabbit trail, I can't think of a worse comparison between 06 Glendale and 07 UF-UM. I realize "SEC Speed" and "O-9.SU" are fun cliches and fans today regurgitate stereotypes, but it takes pretty large blinders to not understand the enormous differences between those gator squads. An excellent win nonetheless, but not remotely comparable to their 06 units, for better and worse.
