Obama vs. McCain - it's official - Wednesday, June 04, 2008 7:18 AM
Should be an interesting race! Obama secured the nomination last night, and the race begins now.

People are saying that there haven't ever been two canditates that differ as much as Obama and McCain do.

The folks saying that must have been born after 1972, McGovern vs. Nixon were miles apart on the issues, Nixon won in a landslide.

I didn't think I would ever again consider voting for one of the two major parties, but Obama may change that.

IMO, both candidates suck.   Three if you want to throw Hillary in there.

Is there any chance we can dig up Ronald Reagan?  Even after years in the ground, I think he would be more of an inspiration given the physical state he's in.
See you in another life, brother.

I'm 60, and have voted in every election, but this one scares me.
I have always voted Republican, now I don't know.
As a Viet Nam veteran, I want us out of a war we have know business being in, but Mclain loves it.
As a die hard republican, Obama really worries me  he is just to liberal for my liking. My fear is that he will give the country away, and taxes will have to go crazy to support him. Also his Muslim background really frightens me.
Buckle your seat belts, I fear the next 4 years no matter who gets in will be a really bumpy ride.

A few things - what do you mean by 'giving the country away' and why does his Muslim background frighten you?

RE: Obama vs. McCain - it's official - Wednesday, June 04, 2008 10:28 PM
Does this really sound good to anyone?

Obama strives to establish a radical democracy that places people's lives under their own  control - a non-racist, classless,
where working people own and control the means of production and distribution through democratically-controlled public agencies.. Where full employment is realized for everyone who wants to work; where workers have the right to form unions freely, and to strike and engage in other forms of job actions; and where the production of society is used for the benefit of all humanity, not for the private profit of a few.
We believe that "Obama" and democracy are one and indivisible. The working class is in a key and central position to fight back against the ruling rich class and its power.
The working class is the major force worldwide that can lead the way to a  future - to a real radical democracy from below. Obama will fight for progressive changes compatible with a future.
Obama will support militant working class struggles and electoral action, independent of the two-party system...
Obama strive for democratic revolutions - radical and fundamental changes in the structure and quality of economic, political, and personal relations - to abolish the power now exercised by the few who control great wealth and the government.

This is the kind of statement that is exemplary of everything that is wrong with American Media.  Obama is not and never was Muslim.  His mother was from Kansas.  His father was from Kenya.  He was never a member of any Muslim community in a religious sense.  The closest thing you can say (if I remember correctly) is that he went to a school in a Muslim society when he was very young, but it was a catholic school.

I think the last several months of fighting with Hillary has nicked Obama up a bit but it's still his election to lose.

To be perfectly honest, I don't think Obama's got the chops to beat McCain.  The Republicans, for better or worse, have gotten really, really good at running campaigns, and I think Obama's lack of experience is really going to hurt him.  Additionally, there are a lot of people - people who you or I would consider normal non-racist folks - who won't vote for Obama because he's black.  It's one thing to hire a black guy to the open sales position, it's another to vote for one to run the country.  Please note, before you get out your verbal howitzers, that this isn't how I personally feel, but rather how a big portion of the country is going to feel.  Obama's got two mountains to climb in this one - and I fear that one of them, with the current state of race in the US - is insurmountable.

wolverines1again, I'm sure you're right in that regard.  Also, from polls and comments and stuff I've picked up it seems that even more people would be less willing to vote for a woman than for a black.  There's still alot of divisions among the majority that may, unfortunately, rear its ugly head.

That's why Obama's choice as VP is crucial.

Just like South Park said when voting you always have to decide between a giant douche or a turd sandwich.
Not sure who I will vote for I like and dislike things about both canidates, maybe I will just write in Larry Bird.

there are new things happening -

I have been following Obama since he first entered elective politics in 1996 and I am very glad he is our nominee --

all the uncredited slams and slurs will keep resurfacing and certainly a segment of this country still sadly lives in its own bigotry but we have the choice now to move forward past the old divisions.

RE: Obama vs. McCain - it's official - Friday, June 06, 2008 7:28 PM

ORIGINAL: Thomas Sowell

ln addition to giving $20,000 of his own money to Jeremiah Wright, as a state senator Obama directed $225,000 of the Illinois taxpayers' money for programs run by Father Pfleger. In the U.S. Senate, Obama earmarked $100,000 in federal tax money for Father Pfleger's work. Giving someone more than 300 grand is not just some tenuous, coincidental association.

Sowell is a smart guy (PhD in Economics) and a hell of a writer, but I would have liked to see a lot more elaboration on the above. Without detail it's just more partisan noise as Sowell is about as conservative as they come.

Just a couple more.

In Obama's own words .

This guy wants to be our President and control our government. Pay close attention to the last comment!!

Below are a few lines from Obama's books . his words:

From Dreams of My Father:  'I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began

to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites.'

From Dreams of My Father:  'I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity

against my mothers race.'

From Dreams of My Father:  'There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself,

maybe.  And white.'

From Dreams of My Father:  ; 'It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names.'

From Dreams of My Father:  'I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own.  It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa , that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself, the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela.'

From Audacity of Hope:  'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.'

What do you have against Muslims?

Are you going to say terrorists and display your complete ignorance?

How much more propagandic slander are you going to spew?  I don't wear a flag lapel or put my hand over my heart during the anthem.  Am I not patriotic?

Is it entirely shocking that a young biracial boy would have reservations towards whites during the 60s and 70s?  These quotes, aside from being taken completely out of context, only show the complexity of racial tensions in America during that time period, and really this time period.

This is exactly why I will vote for Obama.  NOBODY spews garbage against McCain because Obama is standing for a new politics that isn't fear-mongering and doesn't prey on the fears and ignorance of Americans.  You are just like my Grandfather who forwards me e-mails of the picture of Obama wearing some Muslim garb and claim it is evidence that he is a terrorist.  Pathetic.

Also, since it seems some more education will do us all some good:

امIslam; al-'islām (help·info); pronounced: [ɪs.ˈlæːm]) is a monotheistic Abrahamic religion originating with the teachings of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, a seventh century Arab religious and political figure. The word Islam means "submission", or the total surrender of oneself to God (Arabic: الله, Allāh).[1] An adherent of Islam is known as a Muslim, meaning "one who submits [to God]".[2]
