My Reaction to OSU's Performance Today
-
Saturday, September 06, 2008 10:00 PM
I'm just copy pasting what I wrote on Bucknuts, but figured some of you may want a Buckeye fan's reaction to today's game. I had a 4 hour drive home today from Ohio Stadium, so I had plenty of time to think about this today's game, listen to the post game on various radio stations, and organize my thoughts. I'm not going to argue that today's performance was disappointing. The teams wasn't fired up, the playcalling made for a very boring game to watch, and there was a lot of poor execution on both sides of the ball. But, I didn't expect the threads to have the severity of complaints that I have seen. Critique and discussion is one thing, disapproval and disloyalty are another. Ya, a few things upset me during the game, but am I the only one who is happy we got away with a W? App State Michigan, ECU West Virginia, Stanford USC, Oklahoma Colorado, on and on and on. It's not easy for18-22 year old young men to get up for every single game. It would have been great to have seen the team play with more fire today and execute better, but I'm ecstatic that we were able to avoid a catastrophic loss. Am I upset about losing the past 2 national championship games in the fashion that we have? Of course. I spent a fortune to be at both so one day I could tell my kids "I was there". I would have loved to have won, and probably would have cried if we did. The thing that you guys forget is that it is a privilege to be an Ohio State fan. Ya, other school's talk a lot of trash about us, but 95% of them wish they were us. There is something special about the band ramping in to Skull Session, the pennants flying from the stadium on gamedays, the beautiful rotunda, the sound of the all brass band, the Buckeye leaves accumulating on the helmets as the seasons unfolds, on and on and on. It is special to be a Buckeye fan. It's unfortunate that the magic that was the 2002 season has raised most of your expectations to unfathomable levels. For those of you who were fans before that special team, you know that the atmosphere in the Shoe is different now. Before, good plays were met with cheers of joy and ecstasy; today, they are met with a simple clap of approval. Today was a down and was unexpected, no doubt, but I can't say that I'm any less excited to board my plane to LA than I was before today's kickoff. Before you know it, it will be the second week of January and we all will be counting down the days until football season is upon us.Enjoy the season. Enjoy its ups and downs. Beat USC. Go Bucks. Although we cheer for different teams, I think a lot of those same principles apply to your season this year.

I fully expect tOSU to win by at least a touchdown next week...so who cares what happened this week? They won, so they didn't embarass the conference. Yay.

So a team that struggled vs OU at home is going to go on the road and beat USC by a TD? And you fully expext that?? You better hope they have Bennie in to back you up on this..

section43row50 dont care about how YOU feel about YOUR team. this is a Michigan forum, respect it. my opinion is the same as yours but I can't post that to back you up since if I do I'll get yelled at... I own a White Sox board and every so often some scrub wants to post their paeons to their team and I just really don't care... what we got was not a report on osu which we might all be interested in as they are a rival, but instead we fot a love song to a school that I think very little of even though I avidly cheer for osu as a big 10 team in their bowl games, I don't want to read their odes to themselves so I am with you but just not going to say it, wouldn't be prudent, I'll just quietly conform to the policy here so the osu fans and their fans won't scold me -

I'm rooting for OSU next week, although with them struggling with Ohio today, I just don't see it happening. I mean, anything can happen. We lost to App. State and beat Florida, but that was really improvements throughout the course of a season, you guys have to play them next week. I hope you guys win, I'm rooting for you, but if I was betting on this game I'd take SC.

Do 95% of CFB fans wish their teams had a record similar to tOSU's over the last 7 years? Probably. Do they wish they were you? Only in your mind. The rest of the post is based on a decent thesis, but you lost me with the nonsense above. Also, I think you meant 'Yeah' above as 'Ya' is not a word. Your tOSU education is truly paying dividends.

This is a Michigan forum, I don't want to see buckeyes posting stuff about thier team! I don't mean that in a harsh, meanspirited way; If you have something to compare about your team with ours, that's cool, but just straight talking about your team...uh, hmm, isn't there enough interest on your forums sites? Look dude (I'm assuming you are a dude) we have enough of our worries and concerns about our team; we don't need to get teary eyed over our biggest rival! That's just wrong. Seriously. I feel like I'm talking to my bros about women and someone at the table brings up issues he has picking up guys...

I live in ohio, and the average osu fan is a jerk. I don 't want to come to these boards to read about someones love affair w/ osu. If I wanted that, I'd use espn boards, which are a joke. Any Michiogan fan that roots for osu, doesn't live around these people and do not get it. I have had osu fans flat out say they hate me, because I like Michigan. Some of my good friends are osu fans and are great people until you bring up college football, then they turn into morons. I will be watching the game next week w/ osu fans and will be rooting for the trojans!

section43row50 dont care about how YOU feel about YOUR team. this is a Michigan forum, respect it. Seriously, could you be any more of an ***hole with this post? This is the most ignorant, obnoxious, impolite, rude, and pointless post I have seen on this board in 7 years. And its not the first time you have done it. For some reason, you think being rude to Ohio State fans is necessary since you are a fan of Michigan. This is embarrassing to the rest of us that are Michigan fans and Michigan students and alumni. Our rivalry with Ohio State is based on, yes, somewhat of an underlying hatred, but mostly a RESPECT for the opposing football program. I can't tell you what to do, but I would highly suggest growing up so you don't make such an *** out of yourself.

Yes, I fully expect a veteran team with 19 returning starters from last year's national runners up to go into the national spotlight and outshine a USC team that has an inexperienced QB and much less motivation than Ohio State. OSU was embarrassed against Florida, then last year, despite outgaining LSU, was embarassed on the scoreboard because of costly turnovers and penalties. I expect OSU to make a statement next week- and personally I should hope you would want them to, the Big Ten looks like crap in the national picture as of late.

A win is a win is a win is a win. You take care of this week and you move on to the next week. People who seem to think that yesterday's performance is an iron clad predictor of how a team will come out the following week simply do not understand football. I will never forget the attitude of this board and the fanbase following the Central Michigan game (a 41-17 victory by the way) in 2006... this was the week prior to playing #2 ND in South Bend. It was a constant barrage of "we can't throw the ball down field" "we refuse to throw the football" "we're going to get killed" and on and on and on. It's extremely frustrating to read overly negative posts after a WIN. Football, like golf, is not a game of perfect. Ohio State fans would do well to remember all those horrifyingly ugly, awful wins of 2002... not a one of them was pretty, but add them all up and you have a NC. So what if they looked flat in an obvious look-ahead game without their best player. We Michigan fans have lived through that scenario far too often in the last few years, and you just have to get through it with what you have. Ohio State fans are getting a taste of what it was like for us to miss Mike Hart for huge chunks in '05 and '07, and they have to realize that you don't just plug another guy in and not miss a beat. They got the win, now they have to move on to the following week.
