Herbstreit a "huge Michigan State fan...." - Thursday, July 24, 2008 4:30 PM
Spartan's coach Dantonio:

"The Michigan State-Michigan game, which takes place on Oct. 25 in Ann Arbor, might not contain the nastiness that characterized last year’s contest with U-M having a new head coach and many new players. Dantonio said that he’d moved on from the heated comments he made during a press conference the week after MSU’s loss, including his attack on former U-M running back Mike Hart’s characterization of MSU as the Wolverines’ “little brother.”

"If they can start well and get some confidence established beforeconference play, I don’t think there’s any reason that Michigan Stateshouldn’t win eight or nine games this year."

Evidently Herby has not followed MSU in previous seasons.  Early wins for them mean a 6-6 or 5-7 season not 8 or 9 wins.

Herbie's the same doofus who was singing Anthony Morelli's praises at this point last year... talking about how he'll be the class of the conference and lead PSU to the conference title.

"And Dantonio is sure that the Spartans won’t look past U-M this year, regardless of potentially being favored to win."

Look past UM?  It is their super bowl every year.  Their countdown clock is reset for that game!  Maybe if MSU is undefeated and UM is winless and the "little brother" bulletin board material is forgotten, they may look ahead.

I'm a big Herbie fan, and, shocking as it might sound, he actually knows his stuff. He is one of the better analysts ESPN has. I met him in the press box last year at Illionois and we talked about the Big Ten for a minute or so, and I have never ever thought that he has favoried Ohio State over Michigan.

Of course he favors Ohio State, but I think he does a better job of masking it than any of the other commentators. I think everyone has biases towards/against certain teams for whatever reason. I think what makes a good broadcaster is how well they can hide those and put forward an objective view point.

I enjoy Herbie as well, I think he's a great personality for the show and broadcasts, but more than a few of his "predictions" over the years have contained two elements:

1. A wide margin of "wrongness"
2. A never-ending attempt to not appear to be an OSU homer.  This bugs me because we all are aware that he went to school there, if he thinks they're going to be good, he doesn't have to apologize for it...  What bugs me is how far he'll go out of the way to back a lesser team in an attempt to appear objective.  We're all aware of the potential bias Kirk, just tell us what you really think please.

Point number one tends to take a tole after a while.  He knows his stuff as an analyst before and during the games (which is when he's at his best), but breakdowns of the upcoming season?  Eh, not so much.  I wish he'd leave the season predictions, etc, for the Mark Mays of the world.
