Hanging a Plasma TV over Fireplace - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 9:21 AM
Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am moving to an apartment in downtown Boston resulting in an enormous sacrifice in floorspace.  As such, I want to hang my 50" plasma over the working fireplace in this new apartment.  I have no need to hide wires (I'll buy a little sleeve or something to make it look presentable), but I need some help on this.

1)  How do I tell if there is brick or studs behind where I want to hang it?  There is drywall there now, but I'm assuming that the drywall is either studded out against brick, or right up against the brick.  Is it as easy as takning a studfinder and running it across the wall?  If it stays "lit" then there is solid brick behind?  If it doesn't, then there are studs?

2)  I'm not too worried about the heat factor - I don't plan on using the fireplace all that much - but is there some other problem about fireplaces that I need to be concerned with?

3)  If it's brick, it's just as simple as getting brick anchors and going at it right?  Am I missing something?  If it's studs, then install as if it were any other wall, correct?

4)  Is there any trick to hanging a TV that I should be aware of?  I've heard the only thing is that component wires are impossible to get to once the TV is on the wall, so be sure that it's wired when you hang it.  Any other tips?

Thanks!
