Getting Beat..I hate OSU - Monday, April 21, 2008 5:33 PM
For everyone who follows national recruiting, it is pretty blatent that Tressel is just cleaning house so far this year. I am just curious why. Is it the spring game? They had many top recruits come in there to see a packed house even when it was ugly weather, and all their recruits were blown away by the whole weekend. Obviously Michigan couldnt have had the game in the big house, but when we can, will we pack the house? Will we give recruits a feeling of what it is like to be in the biggest stadium in the nation for a football game? I know it is really early in the recruiting year, and I never usually follow recruiting til the end of the fall but have paid more attention to it this spring. Do you think it has anything to do with RRod being new and not having been able to recruit certain kids to Michigan since the fall when he was at WVU? Just looking for some input from others cause rumor is floating around OSU that camp superstar Jaamal Berry is going to committ to OSU anytime soon, when we just offered him about a week ago. Should we expect early committs once RRod has been around for a whole year as well as a season played? I think so...what about you?

OSU is on a roll right now, but we're not doing so bad.  Remember that nowadays, OSU often wants a little different player than we do.  Bigger OL vs. quicker, etc.  We sometimes offer the same players as OSU, but they aren't always our best prospects.  If you offer over 70 kids, and can only sign 25, then some are not best prospects for our system.  We will get our players, and then we have to see if OSU can defend the speed/aggression of new UM.  So far, they have had their problems with spread teams.

OSU has been getting those big spring crowds for a long time, and I don't think UM has ... anyone have numbers?  Nevertheless, we have always gotten really good players -the equal or better of OSU most years - with less of a spring show.  The spring game is partially to show recruits, partially for season prep, and partially to inspire alumnai donations.  We should do more also IMO.

Actually, it is because sweatervest is giving away free mercedes to recruits that commit.
tOSU was THE leader in graduation rate and a role model for discipline during the Woody Hayes-Earle Bruce era. Cooper destroyed that legacy. RR is UM's version of Cooper. I will enjoy seeing UM fans kicked off your high horse when arrests pile up.

its amazing what getting to 2 straight NC games will do for your recruiting even if you lose. its the hot place to go right now, just like miami was in the 90's.  RR is still adjusting and we are getting in late on some of these guys. i think all things considered we are doing great right now. i think in a few years we'll be back on par with OSU.

I don't doubt OSU gets a packed house for their spring game.  What else is there to do in Ohio when your choices are a) watch paint dry, b) watch the grass grow, or c) go to the OSU spring game?

I truly think you are focusing too much on the enemy. I live here in Columbus, and yeah there was nothing much to do Saturday, outside of watching the NBA playoffs all day. The Buck Nuts will turnout for there team, that is definitely true. But so what. We are Michigan so to get envious or discouraged because we aren't doing what they do is silly. We are in a totally different situation as they are right now. Michigan has too many NEW things right now some are unsure. NEW coach, NEW stadium, New quaterback. Calm down everything will work itself out. The highest draft pick they have is Vernon Ghoulston, and where did he come from. The great state of Michigan. We are representing the draft so hard this year it is not funny. It is ok to not be on top of everything, as long as you keep in mind the best is yet to come. Don't worry Michigan will be fine.

It's will be that much better when we beat OSU knowing they got all these "stud" recruits.   All the buckeye fans will think their team is invicible and that will make the victory that much better for years to come.  I don't envy OSU, they have a great following and have been successful over the Tressel era, good for them.  We are starting a new era here at Michigan and that is what i'm excited about.

Really? There's actually such a thing called "too expensive" for OSU coaches? Don't they just get boosters to pick up the rest?

OSU made their spring game the centerpiece of a whole weekend of activities in Columbus.  Call it Buckeyepalooza.  It is a well-orchestrated marketing machine down there, but leave the circus and the fanfare to the clowns in Columbus.

We have work to do, as mentioned above.  Let's keep Michigan a University with the best Football Program in the country.

Good point southern...I hadnt even thought about that to be honest. Now that I think about it, I remember Oklahoma bringing in all the stud recruits when they went to the national championship a couple times, same for USC, and now florida and OSU. I guess it is just a fad of college football. Heres to hoping we become the fad once RRod and Michigan get through the transition!!!

O$U boosters are feeling the pinch these days, the payouts they expected from winning the last two NC's haven`t actually come to fruition.

Still managed to get Pryor a pretty nice ride though so it looks like things are all that bad I guess.

Unlike those schools, Michiagn will NEVER be a fad. That is why we have been in the top 25 for forever, and why we continue to go to a bowl game for 32 years. We have a strong foundation and although we may go in waves with great seasons. Michigan has always been a place kids want to play. OU and OSU are similar, except we don't hand out money. USC and Miami are 2 of the biggest bandwagon teams we have seen in 30 years. Both their stadiums suck, and if they don't play well, nobody cares as much, but when they are good, people puff their chests out.
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. ----Aristotle
