German player coming? - Thursday, May 15, 2008 2:39 PM
Found this on Rivals from their writer

On the hoops recruiting news ...

I don't think it's done yet (but getting very close). There's an article from a German paper that says big man Robin Benzing (a German, as you probably guessed) is choosing between U-M and San Diego (which we'll link soon).

Found this post, too, on a Florida board, which confirms what we've been hearing.

"I do not know too much about Basketball, so this question might be a little stupid for some of you. I am living in Germany and there is a pretty good basketball player at my high shool right know. The rumors say he has offers from Michigan, F$U, Idaho and others. He is (was) captain of the German national team (U19) .

"My question is if there might be a possibility the gators would be interested in him or not and how to get some Informations about him to the coaches. Maybe they know about him and think he is not good enough , what would be ok with me. I just thought they do not have too many Basketball-scouts in Germany so maybe someone might know someone to talk about him. His Name is Robin Benzing. If someone would like to know more about just ask."

He's 6-10, skinny (some say soft), but very good putting the ball on the floor and skilled. Would rather shoot than post up.

Some other notes:

-- From EuropeanProspects.com: German prospect Robin Benzing, who is actually playing for Langen in ProA will most likely join the NCAA next season despite risking a one year suspension for breaching the NCAA rules, which happened to Lucca Staiger and Fabian Boeke this year.

Also, this article from Germany (you'll need a translator) indicated it's between San Diego and Michigan: Robin Benzing.

.Again, sounds like it's close to done, but not yet done. We'll follow up when we hear more, but we think there are still tests to take, etc.

Looks like he won't be coming after all:

Michigan basketball’s international experiment is over – at least for the near future.

Robin Benzing, the German forward who signed with Michigan this spring to enroll for the upcoming season, will not be attending the university, the program announced today.

He did not reach the initial eligibility requirements set forth by the NCAA.

And ...

German prospect Robin Benzing will not enroll at Michigan due to NCAA initial eligibility requirements. The 6-10 forward committed earlier this year and had taken his official visit to U-M just about a month ago.

"We felt Robin had a very good chance of qualification, but in the end the NCAA Eligibility Center found him to be just short of eligibility to receive a scholarship from any Division I university," John Beilein said. "While we were aware of the risk involved with this signing and we are disappointed for Robin, it does not deter our confidence in finding the right student-athletes for the future of this basketball program.

"Robin is a fine young man and we will continue to provide him with the NCAA information he will need if he continues to pursue options in the United States. If he does not pursue these options, I assume he will begin playing at a professional level in Europe starting this fall."

German player coming?

Not anytime soon....
Don't mail it in, don't pack it in, give it everything you've got. Grind it out, I don't care what kind of game you have, somehow try and find a way to get it done ... That's part of my attitude and belief, that you
