Chad - Thursday, August 07, 2008 3:06 PM
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3523819

The Dolphins last week gave NFL outcast Quincy Carter a workout. Carter played for the Dallas Cowboys when Parcells was their coach.
Many viewed Carter's tryout as indicative of the Dolphins' displeasure with their quarterback competition. McCown has been erratic, while Beck has struggled. Henne, it can be argued, is having the best camp.

Good for him, sounds like there is a good chance he will see action this season.

matt ryan i could see, flacco is in a good place with the ravens. He has an absolutly monster arm, and with a little more coaching, will be a solid starter. Dont discount him because he came from d-1aa

Met Matt Ryan at a signing at our office, and he was pretty cool.  Doofus that was with him got up in the middle of the autograph sessions and left because he was bored (He said that in front of everyone too).  Kinda explains why Atlanta isn't worth a flip...

Would love to see Chad get some playing time for the Phins. The team is not really going anywhere this season anyway so they might as well give him some time.

Unless Chad Pennington has something to say about it.  It is rumored that Parcells is going after him because, afterall, he did draft the kid while he was with the Jets.

Pennington signs with the Dolphins and will be the starter.

Looks like Beck or McCown becomes expendable.  According to the reports, Henne has had the best camp so far and Beck and been the most disappointing.

Beck will play the 1st and 3rd quarters tonight and Henne will play the 2nd and 4th quarters.  Interestingly enough, McCown will not play at all.

While mccown has done well this camp, and was even projected the starter by some, i think he'l be released before beck. Even though beck hasnt panned out yet, i dont think they'll release someone with only a year of experience under his belt, and there definitly not cutting henne

Though I would have loved to see Henne starting, this is probably better for him. Give him a year or two to get settled in as Pennington shows he's not the quarterback that Bill thought he was.

Henne was the most effective, throwing for 67 yards on 5-for-10passing. He also led Miami's two scoring drives, and perhaps mostimportantly, he didn't throw an interception.

"He threw the ballaway, which is one of those situations that we talked about," Dolphinscoach Tony Sparano said. "He made a couple nice throws there on someback-shoulder throws."

HENNE IMPRESSES
Still, what Pennington sawfrom Henne should have shown why the team has long-term faith in therookie quarterback. Despite completing only half of his passes (5 of 10with 67 yards), Henne showed an impressive level of poise and comfort.

Duringhis first series, Henne stepped up into the pocket and threaded a hardpass to wide receiver David Kircus across the middle for a 20-yardgain. In the third quarter, he took another chance with a deep pass toAnthony Armstrong for a 21-yard completion.

Beck, who started thegame, also looked considerably comfortable, which was a hopeful signgiven a rocky start to training. Beck completed 5 of 9 passes for 45yards. During his second series, he completed four of his first fivepasses but then lost his momentum with two drive-ending incompletepasses.

But neither Henne nor Beck did anything discouraging. Thesame went for veteran Josh McCown, who unexpectedly played Saturday ina last-minute change of plans that resulted from Pennington's signing.

Infairness to McCown, he didn't have a chance to showcase his abilitybecause of the situations in the game as well as the personnel on thefield for both teams. McCown finished 5 for 8 with 35 yards.

Sparanosaid he wanted to give Henne and Beck the bulk of the time on offensefor varying reasons. For Beck, he wanted to see how he handled startingthe game. And, for Henne, he simply wanted to gauge his progress tothis point.

McCown's lack of playing time shouldn't be viewed asan indicator of his future with the team, something that might havebeen previously assumed, given the suddenly crowded depth chart atquarterback.

Couple of good highlights for Chad:

Pennington will be there until for the length of the contract he signed (two years I believe) but Henne will end up being the QB for the future of the franchise. Pennington can only last so long, I'm sure Sparano will get tired of Pennington not being able to get the ball down field due to his significant lack of arm strength the past few years.
BEWARE the South Side Stench of Colonbus!!!

So this is what Duncan McCloud feels like.

I agree, I think Chad has all the tools to be yet another big time pro quarterback from Michigan. Can you imagine some playoff game with the Pats and the Fins? Brady and Henne matched up mano a mano? That'd be cool!

He might not have the strongest arm, but as hard as it is to believe, he's the most accurate QB in NFL history

• Ethan J. Skolnick, South Florida Sun-Sentinel, comparing Chad Pennington to Henne: "The Chad to watch wasn't the veteran on the sidelines, learning and tutoring. It was the impressive rookie on the field. It was Chad Henne, the second-rounder from Michigan who played the second and third quarters, and showed arm strength, poise and moxie."

• Greg Cote, Miami Herald: "A young quarterback who looks like he could be something special someday. Maybe even soon. I don't care what Chad Henne's passing numbers were. (They were 5 of 10 for 67 yards.) What mattered more was the poise this rookie exhibited in his NFL debut, such as on a 21-yard strike on third-and-18. And the arm strength evident on a couple of deep-out routes, some good decisions he made and the fact both of Miami's scoring drives in Saturday's 17-6 loss to Tampa Bay were with Henne in the huddle."
