The Detroit Lions- What a joke...
Some people asked me
why I pitied Gary Moeller for becoming coach of the Detroit
Lions.
Well, to be blunt, the
Detroit Lion organization is a joke. The organization is
ingrained with mediocrity.
Their latest move is to
hire TV analyst Matt Millen to be the new general manager for the
club. Now you may remember that they almost hired
Millen two years ago. The NFL took notice of the brilliant
strategy and Millen was immediately hired to guide another club...Oh-
wait- that didn't happen. As a matter of fact, no other team has
offered Millen a job since the Lions almost did two years. He's
a quite a hot commodity...
Now the following
reasons are being offered to explain why Millen is a great hire:
- He played on four
teams that won the Super Bowl. What Joe Montana and Terry
Bradshaw weren't available? Being a great player is no
guarantee of being a great coach or general manager.
- He's watched a ton
of video tape of football teams in his job as an analyst. By
this criteria half the people who live and die with ESPN sports
center are qualified to be general managers.
- He has great
experience in negotiating player contracts- NO. He has
experience managing a professional sports team- NO AGAIN.
He's been involved in evaluating and drafting players- NO, NO, NO.
And exactly why was he
hired? The Ford family liked Millen as a television analyst?
We do have to keep things in perspective. Thank heavens that the
Lions are only a sports team. Imagine if the Fords owned a
nuclear power plant- they'd probably try to hire Homer Simpson
to run it... |
