Fritz Crisler, 1938-47, Head Coach

Fritz Crisler coached the Wolverine Football team from 1938-47 (71-16-1) ending his coaching career with a victory in the 1948 Rose Bowl over USC (49-0) after which the Wolverines were voted National Champions. He also designed Michigan's distinctive winged helmet.  Crisler was named National Coach of the Year for 1947.  Note: Notre Dame also claims to have won the 1947 National Championship since they were #1 prior to the bowl games.
