U-M Spring Practice: A Look at the Future...

First of all, I'm going to complain that the Athletic Department decided to not allow photographs to be taken of the practice.  Fortunately, I was able to take some pictures before being chastised.  The format of the 1999 Spring Game was a little different than in years past.  Instead of a blue/white scrimmage it was more of a controlled practice.  Players were run through various drills and then at the end the offense drove down the field a few times.  The blocking on the punt teams was bad and several punts were blocked and returned for touchdowns.  Anthony Thomas looked great at RB, breaking a few long runs.

The Quaterback battle is going to be a doozy!  Drew Henson looked sharp but so did Tom Brady.  Last season, Drew could run and scramble but his passes had a tendency to float.  At the spring practice, he threw passes like a rifle.  Brady threw well and actually scrambled a few times, too.     I think that if Drew Henson wasn't splitting his time between football and baseball he'd have a better chance of starting at QB.  While Drew is playing baseball in the minors for Yankees this summer, Brady will be studying playbooks, watching tape, and working out informally with his teammates.  In the end the only people truly qualified to make decision on starting quarerback are the coaches who watch these guys every day in practice. Will Tom Brady's experience overcome the athleticism of Drew Henson?  Stay tuned.
