BETWEEN THE TACKLES

2/13/02- WHY DO SOME PEOPLE EVEN BOTHER TO CALL THEMSELVES 'FANS'?

After listening to much of the drivel on Michigan talk radio this past week I have to ask the following question:

Why do some people even bother to call themselves fans?

Following your favorite sports team should bring you joy.  It should be a diversion from the problems of your life.

Now I have to admit that I don't think much of talk radio.  When the lowest common denominator for active participation is knowing how to use a telephone that should give you a pretty good idea of how enlightening the discourse will be.

The last week has been maddening.  The recruiting season coupled with the shake-up in the football coaching staff seems to have emboldened every malcontent to take to the airwaves and expound their 'views'.

The offense stinks, the defense stinks, Lloyd stinks, Jim Herrmann stinks, etc. etc.  Geez, if everything is that bad pick another team to follow.  I'm not saying that people can't criticize the decisions that Lloyd Carr makes.  He's human, he makes mistakes.  But in the end the whiners on the radio need to understand one thing.  The decisions are Lloyd's to make.  If you don't like the decisions have the courage to call for Lloyd's resignation.

Stan Parrish stinks...Yeah, right nobody was saying that before this year.  Many people point to 2000 Michigan offense as one of the greatest ever assembled by a Wolverine squad.

People are criticizing the possible elevation of Terry Malone from offensive line coach to offensive coordinator.  What has Terry done?  Well, four of his offensive lineman were starting as rookies in the NFL this year. He only oversaw the Michigan offensive line during most of Anthony Thomas' career.  I'm sure that the blocking of the offensive line had nothing to with Thomas being the all time Michigan rushing leader.

Lloyd Carr will hire the people he wants.  He'll run the offensive that he wants.  He'll be responsible for the consequences.  We'll watch and cheer and some unhappy people will continue to whine even if the football team goes 12-0.  Don't believe me?  There are 'fans' who still whine about 1997.  I'm not talking about the ones who complain about the coaches screwing Michigan and forcing a split National Championship.  I mean the ones who bitterly criticize Lloyd for not running up the score or unleashing the offense, etc. etc.  News Flash- If you can't enjoy an undefeated football season and a split National Championship you're never going to be happy.  I guess you're the ones whining on the call-in shows...I just have to wonder- who did you get to dial phone for you?
