3/19/2000- Why I don't root for other Big Ten Rivals

The Wolverines are out of the post season basketball picture.  MSU and OSU march into the NCAA tournament carrying the Big Ten banner with them.  You may ask, "why not root for Big Ten rivals- an MSU National Championship will only help the prestige of the Big Ten (and help Michigan as well.)

Well I say...

HELL NO.

I refuse to forget my disdain for Michigan's traditional rivals because of the time of year.  If I disliked MSU when they played Michigan I don't like them anymore when they're playing someone else.

Every game that a Michigan rival wins helps them in recruiting.  There's too much history to just forget.  MSU is the school whose Athletic director voted against the Wolverines going to the Rose Bowl in 1973 choosing to send OSU instead of the Wolverines.  Who can forget the 1990 UM/MSU game where the Spartan defender ADMITTED to cheating in order to stop a two point conversion attempt to Desmond Howard?  How can you root for a school whose greatest football memory in the last half century is a pathetic tie against Notre Dame in the 60's?

And don't get me going on hockey.  I still meet MSU fans who brag about how MSU is a hockey school.  Now admittedly MSU has a good program.  But what school has won the most NCAA hockey titles?  Michigan (9).  The Wolverines have won as many titles in the last five years (2) as the Spartans have ever won.  The Wolverines have won more games in the last ten years than anyone else in college hockey but you wouldn't know from reading the coverage in local media.

Now, I've concentrated on Spartan bashing but OSU has done their share to be disliked as well.  As if being from Ohio isn't bad enough?  Any school that chooses a nut as its mascot should be viewed with suspicion.  OSU will never/should never be forgiven for tearing down the coveted M Club supports you banner before a football game with Wolverines at Michigan Stadium in the early 70's...
